I want to be able to purchase locally produced goods. I believe it’s good in a variety of ways from being less shipping intensive and supporting local economies (as opposed to contributing to inefficient or abusive oligopolies or monopolies).
However, with the size and resources available to large companies, it can be very easy for them to masquerade as small local brands. For example, Blue Moon was accused of misleading consumers into believing it was actually an independent craft brewer, when in reality, it was produced by MillerCoors (in turn a subsidiary of Molson Coors Brewing company). MillerCoors made $7.7 billion in revenue in 2015 (according to Wikipedia). Molson Coors Brewing Company made $4.8 billion in revenue in 2016 (according to Wikipedia).
What I want is an app that you take a photo of the logo/packaging, and it will tell you it’s parent company (or its parents as there can be multiple layers). This but on a larger scale and in app form.
Does this already exist? Is there anyone working on it?
